Understanding the IRS Identity Protection PIN
Tax season is stressful enough without concerns about identity theft and tax fraud. To combat these issues and help taxpayers safeguard their information, the IRS offers an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN).
What is an IP PIN?
An Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is a six-digit number assigned to taxpayers by the IRS. Once issued, an IP PIN is required to electronically file your federal tax return or to confirm your identity on paper-filed returns.
Why is an IP PIN Important?
Tax-related identity theft occurs when someone uses your Social Security number (SSN) to file a fraudulent tax return and claim a refund. An IP PIN prevents this by requiring the unique code to file a return. Without the correct code, the IRS will reject the fraudulent return.
Who Can Get an IP PIN?
Initially, IP PINs were available only to victims of identity theft. The IRS has since expanded the program to allow all taxpayers to voluntarily opt in to receive an IP PIN each year.
How to Get an IP PIN
If you were assigned an IP PIN for 2024 and did not opt out of the annual renewal, an IP PIN has been assigned to you for use in 2025.
If 2025 is the first year you are requesting an IP PIN, the process is straightforward:
Create an IRS online Account: Visit the IRS website if you don’t already have one.
Use the Get an IP PIN Tool: Once your account is set up, access the “Get an IP PIN” tool. Follow the instructions to generate your six-digit PIN.
Receive and Use Your IP PIN: After receiving your IP PIN, provide it to me to include on your federal tax return. A new PIN will be issued each year, unless you opt out, which you can retrieve online.
What if You Lose Your IP PIN?
If you lose or forget your IP PIN, you can retrieve it through your IRS online account. Alternatively, you can contact the IRS for assistance, although this may take more time.
Important Considerations
An IP PIN is valid for one calendar year. Even if you requested an IP PIN later in 2024 to use for your extended 2023 return, you still need a new IP PIN in 2025 to use for your 2024 tax return. I recommend you request an IP PIN at the beginning of the calendar year before the IRS begins accepting electronically filed returns, which for 2024 returns is January 27, 2025.
Annual Renewal: Remember, your IP PIN changes every year. Make a habit of retrieving your new IP PIN before tax season begins. If you don’t provide me with your new IP PIN, your return will be rejected when I submit it electronically.
Keep Your IP PIN Secure: Treat your IP PIN like you would any other sensitive personal information. Avoid sharing it unnecessarily.
Conclusion
The IRS Identity Protection PIN is a valuable tool for safeguarding your personal information and ensuring your tax return is securely filed. Whether you’ve experienced identity theft or want to take preventive measures, obtaining an IP PIN is a proactive step toward protecting yourself during tax season.
